EarthFest 2008:
Events
Youth Area
Learn what each of us can do to help reduce global warming and why. Come enjoy games, activities,
and crafts for all ages. Take home a plant, learn how worms compost, try a local snack, play music, make
your own reuse craft, and more! There will be great prizes for learning all 10 steps. Inspire your
kids to take a role in helping the planet. For more information, contact
Katie Swick, EarthFest Youth Area Coordinator.
Production of "The Lorax"
Students from the Environmental Club at Belle Morris Elementary will be performing Dr. Suess' "The Lorax" on
Pellissippi's campus at noon on the day of EarthFest (April 26). For more information about this production, contact
Micah Reynolds.
Film Room
Throughout EarthFest on April 26 we will be showing various environmentally related films in Pellissippi's
J.L. Goins Administration Building, Room 136.
The following three environmental films will be shown:
-
- "Kilowatt Ours" is a film that is guaranteed to help reduce household
energy consumption. There will also be the screenings coordinator from "Kilowatt Ours"
on hand after each show to answer questions about the film. Show times
for "Kilowatt Ours" are 1 & 3pm.
- "The Story of Stuff" by Annie Leonard is a 20-minute,
fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and
consumption patterns. It will teach you something, it will make you laugh,
and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life
forever. Show times for "The Story of Stuff" are 2 and 4pm.
- The "Pigeon River Project" is a short fifteen minute documentary film on the current
pollution problems on the local Pigeon River.
The only show time for this film will be at 5pm.
For more information about the film room, contact
Micah Reynolds, EarthFest Film Room Coordinator.
Compost Bin Sale
The Knoxville Recycling Coalition will be selling compost bins during EarthFest. Please contact them through their
website or by
email or call them at 865-525-9694.
EarthFest to Buy Carbon Offsets
This year through a substantial sponsorship from UT’s Make Orange Green program EarthFest will be able to purchase carbon offsets
to limit the impact the event will have on the environment. It has been estimated the event could generate 89 metric tons of carbon
dioxide emissions. Working with an organization called TerraPass which funds carbon reduction projects, EarthFest will purchase offsets
for projects like those that support turbine wind farms, landfills where there are active methane gas collection systems to turn the gas
into electricity or, support promotion of clean products such as compost bins or rechargeable batteries. More detailed information to
follow and will also be displayed during the EarthFest event at Pellessippi State.
Silent Auction
There will be a silent auction this year at EarthFest to benefit local environmental organizations. The auction will run
from 12pm-4pm on the day of the event (April 26). For more information, please visit the
Auction page.
AAA Accepting Auto and Marine Batteries in April
AAA of East Tennessee is accepting donations of automobile and marine batteries during the month of April. Used automobile and marine
batteries can be dropped off at EarthFest or the AAA East Tennessee office located downtown on West Fifth Avenue or any AAA Approved
Auto Repair Facility. A list of AAR facilities can be found at AAA.com. After the roundup, the batteries will be sold and recycled.
The proceeds from the sale will go directly to Ijams Nature Center in Knoxville. Visit AAA East Tennessee at their booth at Earth Fest
on Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Pellissippi State Community College.
Mercury Thermometer Exchange
Please bring your mercury thermometers to EarthFest 2008 and exchange them for a free,
new digital thermometer courtesy of the City of Knoxville Solid Waste Office. Mercury
thermometers are both an environmental and a health and safety problem. Mercury thermometers should be brought in a secured
container to drop off at EarthFest.
Holistic Mom's Network
Throughout the event, the Holistic Mom's Network
will provide a comfortable space for parents to care for the basic needs of their children.
This space will be available for mothers to nurse their children in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Certified
Lactation Consultants will be on hand for assistance and support, and there will be plenty of information available
about the soon-to-be opened breast-feeding center at the Lisa Ross Women's and Birthing Center as well as info about
benefits of breast-feeding. The East Tennessee Breast-Feeding Coalition will be on site to hand out brochures as well.
Space for a baby changing system with information about sustainable diapering will also be available. Water will be provided
to users of the space, free of charge.
Keep Blount Beautiful Accepting Cell Phones and Accessories
As part of the "Wipe-out Wireless Waste" program, Keep Blount Beautiful (KBB) will be accepting cell phones, chargers, and related
accessories at their booth during EarthFest. If you forget to bring your cell phone for recycling, KBB will provide you with a envelope
to mail your items from home.
Cartridge Collection
REFILL NOT LANDFILL! Cartridge World of Knoxville will have a collection bin on-site for full or empty ink and laser cartridges. Call them
at 865-690-4465 if you would like to schedule a pick-up at your office any weekday.
